How important is it to you to leave an "estate" for your loved ones? Or do you spend it now and let them earn it themselves?

Well, lets see, I have a Roth IRA and have my grandchildren named as beneficiaries on that. I also have some life insurance with my kids named as beneficiaries and I contribute 20% of my gross income to my 401 for my own retirement. I plan on spending my retirement frugally but comfortable and content. Anything that is left over when I am done with my 401 can go to my heirs too!!!

It would be great to leave something for my Family to use productively. It looks possible now but if I live past 100 all bets are off...

It is very important to leave something to my descendants, although, we have no "estate". I do have a lot of collectibles and some good antiques, yet more importantly, in many ways, is a very excellent collection of geanological information and documentation and for many of our lineages!!!

I would hope that the estate we leave for others are fun and loving memories. Shared laughs, tears, thoughts and stuff like that. We have a will already, but that's just stuff I want them to remember they were important and loved, cherished and of such great value. You know, all the things that really matter...

we will leave the kids money, but most importantly, they will have all my personal things, jewelry, photos, letters, scrapbooks, etc...

I can't say that I am believer in (planning on) leaving $ for a capable adult. But then I am not rich, don't have the stigma of a "family name" and no children. I would hope in the event I go first, I have enough in my retirement and investments that my husband would not be financially effected - and visa versa

if we both pass...I want the houses and the (hopefully future) company to go to my nephew Kevin. He's earned it with love and he's earned it with struggle and sincerity.

Wow, I've been missing some of your questions over here, Kelli! I grew up knowing that I had an inheritance coming but at 53 have still not received it as my mom is still alive and I don't wish anything else for her! Once, when we adopted the first three children, my parents were very unhappy about that and they threatened to disinherit me because they didn't want their money to going children other than their biological grandchildren. That took any possible gratefulness for their money out of me and now it I get some I don't really care one way or the other. I am still in the will, but I felt they were wrong to use that as a weapon to try to control me. Obviously it didn't work anyway since we adopted three MORE kids after the first three.

As for leaving something to my children and grandchildren...I would definitely like to do that but it is not the be all and end all of my life. If it happens good, if not, God will care for them. He does anyway. The Bible talks about a godly man leaving an inheritance to his children but it also talks about the inheritance of a good name. I hope that is what I leave my children with the most....my good name.

Thanks for a thought provoking post!
